L1 Line Reopens After 11.5 Million Euro Overhaul
Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will restore service on the L1 metro line between Florida and Plaça de Sants on Saturday, 29 August, ending a five-week suspension that began on 17 July. The closure allowed for major improvements to the rail infrastructure along a 2.1-kilometre stretch of track. The €11.5 million upgrade focused on renewing rails, drainage systems, signalling, and other critical components between Santa Eulàlia and Mercat Nou stations. Work also included modernising the century-old Santa Eulàlia workshop, a key maintenance hub for the metro fleet.
Improvements Aimed at Reliability and Comfort
The project involved around-the-clock work by 170 staff daily to complete the upgrades within the planned timeframe. According to TMB director David Prat, the renovations are expected to enhance track stability, reduce vibrations, improve passenger comfort, and increase service reliability.

said Laia Bonet, first deputy mayor of Barcelona and president of TMB, acknowledging the inconvenience to residents during the closure.
Alternative Services During Works
During the closure, TMB provided replacement bus services running every 4 to 11 minutes depending on the day, with 18 articulated buses operating on weekdays. Passengers were also advised to use connections via metro lines L9 and L10 South at Torrassa station, L5 at Plaça de Sants, or Rodalies commuter rail at L'Hospitalet de Llobregat station.
