Wider Support for Morning Train Service

Five municipal councils in the northern coastal area of Castellón province have formally backed a proposal to improve rail connectivity between Castelló de la Plana and Barcelona. The initiative, led by the Valencian political party Compromís, calls for a new morning train service originating in Castelló and serving key coastal towns. The supporting councils are Benicarló, Benicàssim, Torreblanca, Peñíscola and Castelló de la Plana. The motion has been approved unanimously in Benicarló and by full council vote in Benicàssim. The other three joined through consensual institutional declarations among local political groups. Support from Vinaròs and Oropesa remains pending.

Proposed Route and Service Improvements

The plan demands that the first daily train to Barcelona depart from Castelló de la Plana and stop at Benicàssim, Oropesa, Torreblanca, Alcalà de Xivert-Alcossebre, Benicarló-Peñíscola and Vinaròs. The aim is to support residents travelling for work, education, healthcare and administrative purposes. Compromís argues that northern Castellón’s economic and social ties with Tarragona and Barcelona are hindered by insufficient early-morning rail services.

We need a rail service that reflects the real mobility needs of our communities, not just the current timetable,” said David Guardiola, spokesperson for Compromís in Castellón’s provincial council.

The proposal also calls for:

  • Extending the current service, which begins in Vinaròs, to originate in Castelló
  • Restoring and increasing train frequency between Castelló, Baix Maestrat, Tarragona, Barcelona and Valencia
  • Adding more stops for Euromed and long-distance services
  • Progressing towards an hourly train on the coastal corridor
  • Better coordination between train and bus networks for integrated public transport

The campaign is part of a broader push by Compromís to strengthen regional rail infrastructure and connectivity across the Mediterranean corridor.
