Sharp Drop in Reported Offences
Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) recorded 5,528 criminal incidents on the metro network between January and June 2026. This marks a 34% decrease compared to the 8,388 offences detected during the same period in 2025. The decline continues a sustained downward trend in crime that has been observed since 2019. TMB attributes the improvement to enhanced security measures and closer cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
Security Measures Driving Decline
A key factor in the reduction has been the expansion of video surveillance across the network. More than 11,000 cameras are now installed throughout stations and trains, enabling faster resolution of passenger complaints and acting as a strong deterrent. Footage is monitored in real time at the Metro Control Centre and the Civil Protection and Security Centre. The system activates live when passengers press SOS or information buttons on trains or platforms. Recordings are retained and made available to the Mossos d'Esquadra and other police forces upon request.
Despite the sustained increase in demand, crime continues to fall.
