Injuries and Emergency Response

A woman was injured on Thursday at around midday after being struck by an e-scooter at a pedestrian crossing on Avinguda del Carrilet in Reus. She fell to the ground and suffered a strong blow to the head, prompting her evacuation by ambulance to the Joan XXIII Hospital in Tarragona. The emergency response was activated when several bystanders called emergency services at 112. An ambulance from the Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) arrived shortly after the incident to provide medical assistance on site.

Driver Distracted by Mobile Phone

According to reports from Diari de Tarragona, the e-scooter rider was distracted and looking at their mobile phone at the time of the collision. The impact occurred without the rider having time to avoid the pedestrian. The rider, a young man aged 18, initially remained at the scene and showed concern for the injured woman before leaving. Witnesses reported to Reus local police that he had fled, but police sources confirmed that officers located him a few streets away. He admitted to having left after initially helping, citing confusion.

Hospital Assessment and Outcome

The woman was admitted to Joan XXIII Hospital with an initially reserved prognosis due to a concussion from the head injury. However, later medical evaluations in the afternoon showed her condition was less serious than first feared. Further tests ruled out severe trauma, and she was able to speak with police officers who followed up on her case. No details were released regarding long-term injuries or ongoing treatment.

Safety Concerns in Urban Mobility

This incident adds to growing concerns over e-scooter safety in Reus, with previous reports highlighting misuse, speeding, and distracted riding. The local newspaper Reusdigital.cat has documented multiple cases, including e-scooters running red lights and riders exceeding speed limits. The SEM, Catalonia’s emergency medical service, plays a key role in responding to such urban accidents, with coordination centres and rapid-response units deployed across the region.
