Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police, are investigating the identity and cause of death of a person whose body was found floating in the Utxesa reservoir, in Torres de Segre, at about 1pm on Wednesday 19 August.

The recovery opens a new inquiry at a reservoir where another body was found on 3 June. It also follows a separate investigation into the death of a woman found in the River Segre in Lleida on the same day, although police have not established any connection between the cases.

Dam workers alerted Torres de Segre’s municipal wardens after spotting what appeared to be a body in the water. Mossos patrols and the force’s underwater unit attended and recovered the body.

Police sources said there were no relevant external signs suggesting a violent death.

The person has not been publicly identified and police have not said whether the victim was a man or a woman. The body was transferred to the forensic institute for an autopsy, which is expected to determine the cause of death.

Separate June cases remain under investigation

On 3 June, a body in an advanced state of decomposition was recovered from the same Utxesa reservoir. Mossos found no signs of criminality in that case, and the identity of the deceased has not been made public.

Also on 3 June, at around 4pm, the body of a woman was found in the River Segre in Lleida. Mossos later identified her as a 50-year-old Lleida resident after circulating a court-authorised artificial intelligence-generated facial image.

The force’s criminal investigation area is handling that case. At a press conference, Mossos said investigators had found:

  • “a series of elements compatible with a degree of violence”;
  • grounds to examine a possible criminal cause;
  • the possibility that the death resulted from an accident or suicide.

The autopsy of the person recovered from Utxesa on 19 August will determine the cause of death in the latest case.
