Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police force, are investigating after a body was found floating in the Utxesa reservoir, in Torres de Segre in the Segrià district of Lleida, at about 1pm on Wednesday 19 August.

The victim has not been identified and the cause of death has not been established. The case brought police patrols and an underwater unit to the reservoir, after dam workers alerted municipal guards in Torres de Segre.

Body taken for post-mortem examination

Municipal guards attended after receiving the alert from dam workers and confirmed that the object in the water was a body, according to ElCaso.

Mossos officers then recovered the body with support from their underwater unit. Police sources told ElCaso that there were no obvious signs of violence.

The body has been transferred to the forensic institute for a post-mortem examination. Police are investigating both the circumstances of the death and whether the victim is a man or a woman.

Second body reported in Segrià days earlier

The Utxesa discovery followed another body found on Monday in a canal of the Cap irrigation ditch near Torrefarrera, also in Segrià.

That search began after a caller alerted the 112 emergency service at about 6am to a bicycle lying beside the canal, with its light still on, alongside a bag and a bottle. Bombers de la Generalitat, Catalonia's fire and rescue service, deployed underwater specialists, drones and a canine search team.
