Temporary Closure for Mobility Trial
The Ajuntament de Girona will temporarily restrict vehicle access to the western lane of Plaça Catalunya from 18 September to 3 November. This six-week trial aims to expand pedestrian and cycling space in the city centre. The measure coincides with the European Mobility Week, held annually from 16 to 22 September. During this period, the council will assess how reduced traffic affects public space usage and urban mobility.
The goal is to gain more space for pedestrians and improve the environmental quality of these areas.
Broader Plan for Safer Streets
The trial follows a participatory process involving 42 local associations and residents, which concluded with recommendations to reduce traffic in the square. Among the proposed long-term actions is the installation of a camera to monitor access and prioritise local and authorised vehicles. The city council plans to implement changes progressively, pending technical assessments of feasibility and impact.
Impact on Local Access and Events
From 16 to 30 September, one lane on Rambla will be closed to connect Escola Àgora with the city centre. Updated mobility maps are available on the Ajuntament’s mobility website. The ongoing structural reinforcement of Plaça Catalunya has also prompted a temporary relocation of the Sant Jordi book and flower stalls to Avinguda de Sant Francesc in 2026, a move coordinated with traders and based on safety assessments by the Municipal Police.
