Residents and drivers on the Tarragona coast face a risk of intense rain, urban flooding and rapidly rising streams from 18:00 on Friday until 06:00 on Saturday. Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET, has issued an orange warning for torrential rainfall in the coastal area of Tarragona.

The warning forecasts up to 40 litres per square metre in one hour and 100 litres per square metre over 12 hours. These totals apply to the orange warning period and area, rather than to all of Catalonia.

“Up to 40 litres per square metre could fall in one hour, with 100 litres per square metre possible in 12 hours.”

AEMET says the rainfall could cause flooding in built-up areas and rises in rivers and torrents.

Highest risk before midnight in Baix Camp, Tarragonès and Baix Penedès

Meteocat, the Meteorological Service of Catalonia, has also issued rainfall intensity warnings. It places the highest risk between 18:00 and midnight in the Baix Camp, Tarragonès and Baix Penedès districts.

  • Tarragona coast: AEMET orange warning for up to 40 litres per square metre in one hour and 100 litres in 12 hours.
  • Tarragona pre-coastal area and Barcelona coast: AEMET yellow warnings for 20 to 30 litres per square metre in one hour.
  • Baix Camp, Tarragonès and Baix Penedès: Meteocat warns of at least 60 litres per square metre in three hours, with an additional warning for 40 litres in 30 minutes.

AEMET has also warned of thunderstorms in the affected areas, with the possibility of very strong wind gusts and hail. The warning timetable means people travelling or planning outdoor activities in the Tarragona coastal districts should account for the period from Friday evening to early Saturday.
