The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat) has issued a level 2 on a 6-point danger scale for intense nighttime heat across most of Tarragona province, active from 2.00 to 8.00 on Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 August. Only the Terra Alta comarca is excluded from the alert.
Temperatures are forecast to remain above 25°C on average throughout the night, with some areas in the Tarragonès not dropping below 26°C. This prolonged heat will hinder sleep and maintain oppressive conditions during early morning hours.
Valls Records Historical Nighttime High
Overnight from Saturday to Sunday, temperatures across much of Catalonia did not fall below 20°C, exceeding 25°C along coastal stretches. In Valls, the automatic weather station recorded a minimum of 24.5°C, matching the highest minimum temperature in its 35-year record, previously set on 4 September 2023.
The persistent heat at night is a growing concern, especially for vulnerable populations.
The current warning follows a summer marked by repeated tropical nights, where high humidity and coastal influence prevent nighttime cooling. Preliminary data from Meteocat shows that the litoral and prelitoral zones of Tarragona are most affected due to the sea’s thermal inertia.
Residents Urged to Take Precautions
Authorities advise residents to stay hydrated, avoid physical exertion during peak heat, and keep living spaces ventilated during cooler evening hours. Vulnerable groups, including the elderly and those with respiratory conditions, are urged to take extra care.
