The Ajuntament de Girona has been honoured by the Federació de Municipis de Catalunya (FMC) for its sustained innovation in municipal governance. The award was presented on Thursday, 8 October 2026, during the FMC's General Assembly and 45th-anniversary event at the Palau Firal i de Congressos in Tarragona.

The recognition highlights Girona’s active participation in the Banc de Bones Pràctiques (BBP), a platform that shares effective municipal projects across Catalonia. In 2026, Girona added four new initiatives to the bank, covering anti-discrimination efforts, children’s play spaces, AI in social services, and climate education.

Four New Recognised Initiatives

One of the new entries is Compromís amb els drets, a participatory model for preventing and responding to discrimination. It includes the Casa per la No Discriminació, which offers victim support, and a collaboration network involving social organisations, the University of Girona, public agencies, and residents.

Another project, Obrim les escoles al joc, repurposes municipal nurseries outside school hours to provide free play spaces for children aged 0 to 6 and their families. During its first academic year, it recorded over 1,400 child visits and more than 1,200 family uses.

The third initiative, Construint uns serveis socials intel·ligents, is part of the Pigall project. It uses data and artificial intelligence to support social service planning, detect risk patterns, and forecast future needs. Developed with the eXiT research group and the Observatory of Ethics in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Girona, it aims to improve early intervention.

The fourth addition is the Itinerari d’Acció Climàtica, a 12-kilometre environmental education route across 13 points in different Girona neighbourhoods. It includes informative panels and interactive quizzes designed for schools and young people, addressing topics like climate change, food waste, energy transition, biodiversity, water, and pollution.

Mayor: Innovation Strengthens the City

This recognition reflects the city council’s ability to innovate and drive leading public policies in areas as vital as social action, education, anti-discrimination, and environmental awareness.

Said Lluc Salellas, mayor of Girona. He also praised the technical teams and council departments for their daily work, calling the award a tribute to their commitment.

These four projects join existing Girona initiatives already in the BBP, such as the Congrés de Benestar Emocional, Espais Calma, Dinder Club, and Fons d’Innovació de Girona.

The BBP is a joint initiative of the Fundació Pi i Sunyer and the FMC, designed to promote transferable, high-quality local policies. Girona’s consistent contributions underscore its role as a leader in municipal innovation across Catalonia.
