Igualada's PSC municipal group has called on the Junts-led town council to remove the lights and fabric bunting installed in Plaça de l'Ajuntament, backing a citizens' manifesto which argues that the decorations alter the appearance of the protected historic square.

The group said the manifesto, titled The square is everyone's heritage, was initiated by people from Igualada's cultural sector and has gathered hundreds of signatures. Residents who oppose the installation have also submitted a formal request to the Ajuntament, the town council, and have displayed banners from balconies for more than three months, according to the PSC.

The square is listed as a Bé Cultural d'Interès Local, a municipal heritage asset whose architectural characteristics must be protected, according to previous statements by ARA Igualada reported in September.

"We ask the government to listen to the citizens who have expressed themselves through the manifesto, so that the square can return to its original state," said Jordi Cuadras, leader of the PSC municipal group at Igualada Town Hall.

PSC awaits reply to September request

The PSC said it submitted a formal request to the council on 8 September seeking 14 documents and answers to 10 questions about the project. It said it expects a response in the coming days.

Among its questions, the group is seeking information about the contract, the administrative file and any changes to the project. The PSC alleges that the installation cost €100,000 in municipal funds and says the council has not explained or justified that figure.

Cuadras said the group wants the council to direct public spending towards what it describes as local priorities, including housing, neighbourhood investment, the Rec district, air conditioning in schools, safety and local commerce.

Residents who wish to submit a request to Igualada Town Hall can use the council's e-Tràmits Igualada online procedures portal.
