Party Marks Ninth Anniversary with Territory-Wide Display
On the morning of Thursday 1 October 2026, Junts per Catalunya began unveiling banners across numerous municipalities in Catalonia to commemorate the ninth anniversary of the 1 October 2017 independence referendum. The coordinated action, carried out by territorial branches of the party, features the slogan "Hi érem, hi som, hi serem!" (We were there, we are there, we will be there!). The display coincides with a public manifesto reasserting that the 2017 vote remains a valid political mandate. Junts describes the referendum as "democratic, legitimate and binding", insisting that no police action, court ruling or repression can erase it.
Reaffirming Independence and Calling for Amnesty
In the manifesto, Junts declares that the 1-O referendum was "one of the bravest pages" in Catalonia’s history, an expression of dignity, determination and democratic will. The party highlights that over two million people, "across origins and ideologies", took to the streets to vote despite state violence. Junts reaffirms its objective to "build an independent Catalonia" capable of defending its language and culture, ensuring economic progress and maintaining a welfare state. The party continues to push for international recognition of Catalan statehood and accession to the European Union.
Only when Catalonia becomes an independent state will there be normalisation, because belonging to Spain keeps our country held hostage.
The party demands the full application of the recently approved amnesty law, which has been endorsed by the Constitutional Court. Junts calls for the return of those it considers politically persecuted, specifically naming Carles Puigdemont, Toni Comín and Lluís Puig, all of whom have lived in exile since 2017. Junts attributes delays in implementing the amnesty to resistance within parts of the judiciary.
Commemorative Events Held in Barcelona
Later on 1 October, Junts secretary general Jordi Turull led a delegation to the Barcelona High Court on Passeig de Lluís Companys at 8:45am to accompany Roger Español during the final day of his trial. A gathering was organised in parallel. At 9:15am, Turull and several MPs attended another event at Plaça Sant Jaume to further commemorate the day. Both events were part of a broader effort to keep the memory and political aims of the 1-O referendum alive.
