Police in Catalonia have detected 94 offences during a series of inspections targeting taxis and private hire vehicles (VTC) on the Costa Brava in August. The operation, led by the Mossos d'Esquadra's Regional Traffic Unit in Girona, focused on areas with high tourist traffic, including the Girona Airport and access roads to popular coastal towns.
As part of the enforcement campaign, officers conducted 66 inspections across the province. Six vehicles were immobilised due to serious irregularities, according to a statement issued by the police on 31 August 2026.
The majority of unauthorised services, often referred to as 'pirate taxis', were found operating near Girona Airport. These services used private or rental vehicles to transport passengers for high fees without the necessary official authorisation. Authorities identified 16 cases of unlicensed operation.
Additional violations included 10 related to missing mandatory vehicle markings or equipment, one involving a faulty taximeter, and 13 for safety-related issues such as using worn tyres. These findings highlight risks to passenger safety, the police noted.
Inspections took place in coordination with local police forces in Tossa de Mar, Blanes, Castell-Platja d'Aro, and Roses. Controls were concentrated around key tourist access points including Blanes, Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, Platja d'Aro, and Roses.
Targeted enforcement during peak season
The intensified checks were part of a broader effort to ensure compliance with transport regulations during the summer tourism peak. The Mossos d'Esquadra have stated they will continue monitoring the sector to protect users and maintain fair competition among licensed operators.
The campaign aimed to intensify controls on taxis and VTCs to detect various infringements and ensure passenger safety.
Residents and visitors are reminded to verify that any hired vehicle displays official licensing and identification, especially when booking services at transport hubs or tourist locations.
