Figueres has received 24 trainee Mossos d'Esquadra officers, according to mayor Jordi Masquef, as 159 officers from the force's 33rd intake begin placements across the Girona Police Region. The deployment was presented at Figueres police station on Thursday, 13 August 2026, by Interior and Public Security Minister Núria Parlon.

For residents of Figueres, the arrivals increase the number of regional police officers available during their assessed training year. The Department of the Interior has not published its own station-by-station breakdown for the Alt Empordà, so the net change to each local police station is not yet known.

Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police force, have allocated the new intake among basic police areas in the Girona region after the officers completed training at the Institut de Seguretat Pública de Catalunya, the Catalan Institute of Public Security.

Different numbers reported across the Alt Empordà

Masquef said 24 of the new officers had arrived in Figueres and said La Jonquera would receive 10. The figures were not published as an official departmental allocation.

“I thank Minister Parlon for this first step, but I will continue to press for more Mossos officers to address the public-safety problems in Figueres. Security is the basis for guaranteeing freedom and coexistence.”

In L'Escala, the town council said three trainee officers had joined the local deployment. It said it had initially been told to expect 14 officers and considers the eventual number insufficient for the municipality's permanent policing provision.

The new officers are assigned to the policing structure centred on the Figueres-Alt Empordà Basic Police Area, alongside the force's other territorial deployment points.

Summer reinforcement is a separate deployment

The 159 trainees are separate from the Mossos summer security operation. That plan redistributes 82 serving officers to police stations in municipalities where the population rises sharply during summer, including Roses, although no figure has been released for Roses itself.

  • 13 trainee sergeants and 65 trainee corporals have also joined the region.
  • The region has received 66 Traffic officers and 31 officers from the Àrea Regional de Recursos Operatius, a regional operational-resources unit.

These additional sergeants, corporals, Traffic officers and operational-resources officers are not included in the 159 new Mossos officers from the 33rd intake. The trainees now face an assessed, selective year of practical service before completing entry to the force.
