The Regió Policial de Girona has strengthened its ranks with 159 new agents from the 33rd promotion of the Mossos d’Esquadra, following their graduation from the Institut de Seguretat Pública de Catalunya (ISPC). These officers will be deployed across basic police areas in Girona’s comarques to support public safety operations.
In addition to the new recruits, 13 sergeants and 65 corporals who completed advancement courses at the ISPC joined the region in July. The reinforcement also includes 66 officers assigned to the Àrea Regional de Trànsit, distributed across sectors in the area, and 31 new agents for the Àrea Regional de Recursos Operatius (ARRO).
Expanded Capacity for Summer Demand
ARRO provides rapid response support for public order, large-scale events, and operations requiring extra personnel. According to the Mossos d'Esquadra, the expanded staffing will bolster services during peak tourist periods, especially in summer when visitor numbers and public events increase across Girona’s regions.
Newly deployed officers will participate in initiatives including knife and firearm detection, prevention of sexual violence, natural space surveillance, road safety enforcement, and nightlife zone controls.
“The incorporation of these agents ensures greater visibility and responsiveness during high-traffic months,” said a spokesperson for the regional command.
Record Number of Officers on Duty
The latest additions push the total strength of the Girona police region past its previous record of 2,107 officers, according to the Department of Interior. Growth over the past four years, up 11.5% since 2022, reflects sustained recruitment efforts despite ongoing retirements and internal promotions.
Data provided by Interior show that staffing remained stable between 2022 and 2023 before rising steadily in 2024 and 2025, with an additional 36 officers added this year. The expansion supports both growth and replacement needs, particularly in older-established stations such as Figueres, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Olot, and the regional traffic unit.
