Thirty-one councils in the Girona area sent 76 aspiring local police officers to the latest basic training course at the Institut de Seguretat Pública de Catalunya (ISPC), Catalonia’s public security training institute. They represented 16.3% of the 465 future local officers who completed the course across Catalonia.
For residents, the figure indicates the scale of the latest intake linked to municipal forces in the Girona area. Local police are municipal services whose work and powers are generally limited to their own council area, except in emergencies or authorised joint arrangements.
The 76 candidates were among 218 course participants living in Girona’s counties who reached the end of the training. That wider group also includes future Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police force.
Girona was second by trainees’ home area
Girona was the second-largest area by the number of residents completing the course, according to graduation figures reported by Diari de Girona.
- Barcelona: 1,287 trainees
- Girona counties: 218 trainees
- Tarragona: 212 trainees
- Lleida: 71 trainees
Within the Girona cohort, La Selva had 64 trainees, followed by Gironès with 46, Baix Empordà with 43 and Alt Empordà with 30. Garrotxa had 15, Ripollès eight, and Cerdanya and Pla de l’Estany six each.
Girona city sent seven candidates
Girona’s Municipal Police sent seven candidates, the highest total among the local forces named in the graduation figures. Castelló d’Empúries and Sant Feliu de Guíxols each sent six.
The diploma ceremony for the ISPC’s 39th promotion was held at the Circuit de Catalunya in Montmeló and was chaired by the Minister for the Interior and Public Security, Núria Parlon.
