Joint Operation Targets Crime Hotspot
A police operation conducted by Mossos d'Esquadra and Girona Municipal Police in the Germans Sàbat area of Girona concluded with 12 individuals identified and one man arrested. The operation, named Kanpai, took place on the afternoon of 26 August 2026, beginning at 7pm. Twenty-two officers from Mossos d'Esquadra, including units from Girona’s comissaria, the Regional Operational Resources Area, and the Canine Unit, were deployed alongside six officers from the Municipal Police. The 12 individuals identified collectively hold 21 prior criminal records. One of them is linked to illegal possession of firearms, assault, and drug-related offences.
Arrest Made and Legal Proceedings
During the operation, a 33-year-old man with previous convictions was arrested by Municipal Police on suspicion of a crime against public health, a term used in Catalonia for drug-related offences. He was transferred the same evening to the on-duty investigating court at Girona’s courthouse. Additionally, one person identified during the operation faces separate proceedings for driving a motor vehicle despite having lost their driving licence due to accumulated penalty points.
Community Concerns and Ongoing Policing Strategy
The operation targeted specific locations in Germans Sàbat where residents have reported disturbances, including fights, suspected illegal weapons, and drug dealing. Authorities cited ongoing community complaints about certain premises as a key reason for the intervention. According to Mossos d'Esquadra, multiple Kanpai operations have already taken place in the area between 2023 and 2025 under the framework of Law 4/2015 on citizen security. These efforts have focused particularly on a premises on Carrer Alfred Nobel, where previous raids recovered cocaine, cannabis, drug paraphernalia, and cash.
The goal is to identify individuals in specific public spaces where criminal activity may occur, especially in response to resident concerns.
