Igualada will hold its institutional event for Catalonia’s National Day, known as the Diada, on Monday 8 September, with cultural activist Jaume Piquer i Jordana delivering the address at 7.30pm in the Saló de Sessions, the council chamber at Igualada Town Hall.

Residents can then attend the Senyera, the Catalan flag, raising ceremony in Plaça de l’Ajuntament at 8.30pm. The programme presented by Carme Riera, Igualada City Council’s culture councillor, also includes a free awards ceremony on 5 September and a sardana dance event on 13 September.

Piquer to give the institutional address

Piquer, born in Barcelona in 1972, is a cultural activist and organiser. He previously ran Igualada’s Jimmy Jazz café-bar between 1995 and 2005 and is now part of former Catalan president Quim Torra’s office team, according to the programme.

“It is the same now as before, because this goes back a long way…”

That is the title of Piquer’s conference, which opens the municipal event on 8 September.

The Miquelets d’Igualada will receive the authorities at the flag-raising. Cor Exaudio will perform Els Segadors, Catalonia’s national anthem, followed by a selection of popular Catalan songs.

Cor Exaudio was founded in Igualada in 1997, has about 30 women members and is directed by Pablo Morales.

Free cultural events on 5 and 13 September

  • Friday 5 September, 7.30pm: Òmnium Anoia will present its Premis al Compromís Cultural, or Cultural Commitment Awards, at Teatre Municipal Ateneu. Admission is free. The 2025 awards will go to Agrupació Folklòrica Igualadina in the collective category and Marcel·lí J. Valls i Torné in the individual category.
  • Saturday 13 September, 6.30pm: Plaça de Cal Font will host the Diada sardana dance, with music by Cobla Mediterrània. Agrupació Sardanista d’Igualada is organising the event with support from Igualada City Council.

Òmnium Anoia’s awards recognise work supporting the Catalan language and culture. The 5 September ceremony at Teatre Municipal Ateneu is open to the public.
