The CUP is due to decide in Barcelona on Saturday 10 October whether it will contest Spain's early general election on 29 November, as parties finalise the candidates who will seek to represent Catalonia in the Congress of Deputies. The decision will help determine which Catalan parties voters can choose from, while Aliança Catalana has confirmed that it will not stand.
The election was called early by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Sánchez will again lead the PSOE, while Alberto Núñez Feijóo will head the PP ticket and Santiago Abascal will lead Vox, according to reporting published by Regió7 and L'Empordà.
Catalan candidacies remain unsettled
ERC is still negotiating with Gabriel Rufián, its current leader in Madrid, over whether he will again head the party's list. Junts, by contrast, will again put forward its congressional spokesperson, Míriam Nogueras.
The CUP's national board, its highest political decision-making body between the party's national assemblies, is due to make its decision at the party's Barcelona headquarters today.
- ERC: still in talks with Gabriel Rufián over leading its list.
- Junts: Míriam Nogueras is set to lead its candidacy again.
- CUP: due to decide today whether to enter the election.
- Aliança Catalana: has confirmed it will not contest the election.
Left-wing alliance seeks a single ticket
A proposed Front Ampli, a broad left-wing electoral alliance, aims to include Podem and could be led by former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau. The project is among the unresolved candidacies more than a month before polling day.
For voters in Catalonia, the final party lists will determine the candidates available in their constituency for the 29 November vote. Junts has already confirmed Nogueras, while the CUP's decision and ERC's talks with Rufián are still pending.
