Police have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with a near-fatal stabbing that occurred during the early hours of Sunday, 9 August, in El Pont de Suert, Alta Ribagorça. The suspect, a resident of Lleida, is accused of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a young man in the abdomen during a street fight.
The attack took place at around 6am on Carrer Monestir de Lavaix, as celebrations for the town’s Festa Major were winding down. Emergency services responded to reports of a stabbing and found the victim with life-threatening knife wounds. Medical staff from the Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) treated the injured youth and transported him to Vielha Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
Investigation leads to arrest
The Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police, identified two groups of young people at the scene and launched an investigation into the altercation. Witnesses confirmed the groups did not know each other. Detectives from the Investigation Unit (UI) in Vielha collected testimonies and quickly focused on a suspect.
The victim identified the attacker during questioning on Monday, 10 August.
According to police, the suspect had also threatened another young person with the same knife earlier that morning. Based on this evidence, officers travelled to Lleida and arrested the 18-year-old on Wednesday, 12 August.
Charged with attempted homicide
The suspect was transferred to the Tremp judicial custody centre and appeared before the on-duty court on Thursday. He faces charges of intentional attempted homicide. Authorities have not released information about his nationality or criminal history.
