Residents and commuters in the Girona and Barcelona pre-coastal areas should continue to monitor weather warnings on Wednesday 7 October, after Meteocat forecast further showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon.
The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya, known as Meteocat, said the rain could be heavy but is not expected to match the intensity of the recent episodes. It warned that rain may fall on already saturated ground in some of the municipalities most affected by the storms.
“Do not let your guard down,” said Santi Segalà, Meteocat’s head of forecasting.
The forecast covers northern and eastern Catalonia on Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday 8 October, rain is expected again on the Barcelona and Girona coast and pre-coastal areas, with both periods forecast to be less intense than the recent storms.
Emergency response remains active
The Generalitat’s Inuncat flood emergency plan remains in its emergency phase because of the effects already caused across Catalonia. For residents, this means civil-protection and emergency teams remain deployed while recovery work continues in affected areas.
Segalà said people attending Oques Grasses’ concert at Barcelona’s Estadi Olímpic on Wednesday evening should monitor the weather and follow updates. No weather warning was active in Barcelonès, the county containing Barcelona, although warnings were in force in surrounding counties.
Power cuts and recovery work
Endesa reported that 3,199 customers in Catalonia remained without electricity supply on Wednesday, according to figures reported by Europa Press.
In Xerta, Tarragona province, storm damage has led authorities to open a command centre to organise support for residents. Command centres in Granollers and Pineda de Mar, both in Barcelona province, remain active and are in the recovery phase.
Since the episode began on Monday afternoon, Bombers de la Generalitat, Catalonia’s fire and rescue service, has carried out 382 call-outs, including 45 rescues, mainly in the Terres de l’Ebre area of Tarragona province.
Residents can check Meteocat’s weather hazard notices and follow civil-protection instructions before travelling or attending outdoor events.
