Red Weather Alert Activated Across Southern Catalonia

The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat) has issued a red-level weather alert, the highest on its six-tier danger scale, for much of southern Catalonia due to the threat of torrential rainfall, lightning, and large hailstones on Thursday 1 October 2026. The warning affects the Camp de Tarragona, the Garraf, the Penedès, and later the Terres de l'Ebre, including the comarcas of Baix Ebre, Montsià, and Terra Alta. According to Meteocat’s latest forecast, rainfall intensities could exceed 40 millimetres per square metre within just 30 minutes, with accumulations of over 90 millimetres expected in three hours in some areas. These conditions significantly raise the risk of sudden flash floods, especially in low-lying zones, riverbeds, and urban drainage systems.

The adverse weather began affecting the Baix Llobregat and Camp de Tarragona in the morning, with rainfall spreading across most of Catalonia by midday, excluding only the Val d’Aran, Empordà, and Gironès. From 12:00, the danger level rose to red in the Penedès, Garraf, and Tarragonès. The highest risk shifts to the Terres de l'Ebre from 18:00 until nightfall.

Authorities Urge Caution and Limit Non-Essential Travel

Protección Civil of the Generalitat has activated the INUNCAT emergency plan for flooding due to the forecasted severe rains. Residents in affected areas are urged to avoid non-essential travel, stay away from streams, gullies, and underground passages, and refrain from parking vehicles in flood-prone zones. The Catalan Water Agency (ACA) is closely monitoring the Ebre river basin, where the region’s topography and potential for slow-moving or stationary storms could lead to rapid water accumulation and sudden river responses.

How to Stay Informed

Earlier this week, storms in Urgell recorded 26 litres per square metre in 30 minutes, underscoring the intensity now expected across the south. While the Pyrenees face lower hydrological risk due to better soil infiltration, southern regions remain highly vulnerable.
