Yellow and orange weather alerts issued
The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya has activated yellow-level weather warnings for rainfall intensity across the entire Catalan coastline, from l'Empordà to Terres de l'Ebre, effective from early Monday morning. The agency forecasts up to 20 litres of rain per square metre within 30-minute periods. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued orange-level alerts for much of Catalonia, effective from Monday night through nearly all of Tuesday. These alerts anticipate storms potentially delivering between 60 and 100 litres per square metre across the region. If confirmed, Catalonia would be the worst-affected autonomous community during this initial autumn storm episode.
Flood risks prompt public warnings
Meteorologists warn that storms expected from Monday afternoon into Tuesday could bring torrential downpours in short timeframes, increasing the risk of localised flooding. Residents are urged to take extra precautions, avoid streams and dry riverbeds, and follow instructions from local authorities in case of emergencies.
Extreme caution is advised while this weather phenomenon lasts.
The change in weather follows an extended summer with near-40°C temperatures recorded late in September. Now, multiple weather fronts are forecast to cause a widespread drop in temperatures and heightened atmospheric instability across the territory.
Residents advised to limit travel
Protecció Civil and Meteocat have jointly recommended limiting mobility during the peak of the storm activity. The Special Emergency Plan for Floods (Inuncat) may be activated as a precaution, particularly in eastern areas of Catalonia where rainfall is expected to be most intense.
