Emergency alert sent to mobile phones

Protecció Civil has issued an ES-Alert to residents in the Maresme and Vallès Oriental comarcas this morning, warning of locally intense rainfall expected over the next two hours. The alert was sent just after 8:02am via the national emergency messaging system, which delivers sound and text notifications directly to mobile devices in affected areas. Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution, avoid non-essential travel, and stay away from streams, gullies, and known flood zones due to the risk of sudden water level rises.

Meteocat confirms intense rainfall on radar

The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat) confirmed that intense rain cells are currently affecting the coastal and pre-coastal strip of Barcelona province. Radar images from 8:00am show concentrated downpours developing rapidly, a pattern consistent with Mediterranean storm systems capable of delivering tens of litres per square metre in minutes. The agency advises the public to monitor weather updates closely through its official forecasting page at Meteocat's general forecast.

Extreme weather instability continues this morning. We urge people not to approach riverbeds or low-lying areas where flash flooding can occur without warning.

Public safety measures remain active

This morning’s alert follows ongoing adverse weather across Catalonia since Sunday, including torrential rains that caused flooding, one fatality in Tordera, and disruptions to Rodalies commuter rail and metro services in Barcelona. Protecció Civil reiterates that movement restrictions remain in place in several regions under alert. More information on emergency preparedness during heavy rain is available at the Generalitat’s guidance on severe rainfall. Residents who have not yet registered for alerts can sign up via the official Protecció Civil alert service.
