Crews respond to ongoing flood impacts

Bombers de la Generalitat continued clearing flood damage across the Girona region on Monday morning, 5 October 2026, following severe storms that hit the southern Costa Brava on Sunday. The Baix Empordà and Selva marítima comarques were hardest hit, with particularly intense rainfall recorded between Saturday night and midday Sunday. Between 8pm on Sunday and 7am on Monday, the fire and rescue service received 17 new emergency calls linked to the aftermath of the downpours. An additional twenty incidents from Sunday remain open, including flooded underground car parks in Blanes and Platja d’Aro, where crews worked through the night and are returning on Monday to complete pumping and safety checks.

River overflows cause infrastructure damage

The Ridaura river overflowed between Santa Cristina d’Aro and Platja d’Aro, reaching a flow rate of over 300 cubic metres per second, equivalent to a 100-year return period event, according to ARA and La Vanguardia reports based on Generalitat technical data. The surge caused a crack in the asphalt of a bridge in Platja d’Aro, prompting a temporary closure.

The Ridaura has returned to normal and the streets are operational again.

Maurici Jiménez, mayor of Castell-Platja d’Aro, told ARA that structural engineers from the Bombers assessed the bridge and confirmed no serious damage, allowing it to reopen by early afternoon on Sunday. He urged residents to remain cautious, warning that flash floods could still occur.

Widespread alerts and recovery efforts

In Lloret de Mar, around a dozen unresolved incidents remain, including flooded homes and blocked drains. Emergency measures had remained in place until 2pm on Sunday across eight comarques, including Baix Empordà, Selva, and Maresme, according to Spain in English. The Besòs river also surged dramatically, reaching 936 cubic metres per second at Santa Coloma de Gramenet, levels not seen since major floods 60 years ago. Rainfall exceeded 150 litres per square metre in parts of the Baix Empordà, with some areas recording over 100 litres in under two hours, Ràdio Capital reported. At least two people have died in the wider Catalonia region, with another missing in Pineda de Mar, authorities confirmed on Sunday. Residents in affected zones are advised to avoid riverbanks and low-lying areas. Anyone facing flooding or structural concerns should call emergency services on 112.
