Production Underway for 'Alexia' Film

Sabadell is set to appear on the big screen as a filming location for the biopic of Alexia Putellas, the Barcelona FC captain and two-time Ballon d'Or winner. The film, titled Alexia, will include scenes shot at the Maloa Club, where Putellas played in her youth. The production began in 2026 and is expected to be released in the first half of 2027. The film is directed by Lucía Alemany and written by Valentina Viso and Daniel González. It will be a 90-minute fictional feature dramatising the early life of Putellas, focusing on her journey as a young girl overcoming gender barriers and economic hardship to pursue a career in professional football. The project is backed by a budget of approximately €3 million.

Regional Filming Across Catalonia

Filming will take place across several towns in Catalonia, including Badia del Vallès, Sant Cugat, Granollers, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Begues, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Mollet del Vallès, and Valencia. In Badia del Vallès, local authorities have issued traffic notices for disruptions between 14 September and 16 October 2026 due to filming at the town hall, municipal sports centre, L'Oreneta school, and various streets and squares. Sant Cugat has also published information on its City of Film website outlining requirements for filming in the municipality, confirming its involvement in the production. The Ajuntament de Sabadell has supported cultural projects like Picol Films, a local theatre and cinema group, reinforcing the city's role in regional film initiatives.

“The story of Alexia Putellas is an inspiration for young athletes everywhere, especially girls facing obstacles in sport.”

The film is produced by LaCima Producciones, Lazona Films and You First Originals, a subsidiary of the agency representing Putellas. It aims to highlight the challenges of women's football and celebrate Putellas’ rise from grassroots football in Sabadell to global stardom.

Local Pride and National Spotlight

The Centre d'Esports Sabadell, where Putellas began her football journey between 2001 and 2005, is recognised as a pioneer in youth women's football in Catalonia. The Maloa Club scenes will depict this formative period, offering a tribute to the local institutions that supported her early development. As filming progresses, residents in the affected areas may see temporary changes to traffic and street access. The production is expected to bring visibility to Sabadell and the wider region as a hub for cultural and cinematic storytelling.
