No DNI Service Since August 2024
Sant Cugat has been without a local DNI and passport office for nearly two years, since the National Police unit at Carrer Vallès closed on 30 August 2024 due to unsanitary conditions. The keys were returned to the Ajuntament de Sant Cugat, leaving residents to travel to neighbouring towns for essential identity documentation. As of September 2026, citizens seeking appointments at nearby offices in the Vallès Occidental or Barcelona area are offered earliest slots from 4 November in municipalities such as Montcada i Reixac, Ripollet, Granollers, Terrassa, and Castelldefels. In others like Cerdanyola, Rubí, Sabadell, and parts of Barcelona, no appointments are currently available.
Failed Relocation Efforts
The municipal council proposed relocating the service to public facilities including Mira-sol Centre and Passeig de Francesc Macià. A technical inspection deemed the Mira-sol site viable, but negotiations with Spain’s central government did not progress. The council also offered private premises through Promusa, its municipal housing company, which were reportedly well received by police officials. A temporary solution involving a mobile unit was proposed for installation at Passatge de la Marxa Infantil, near the town hall and local police station. The council claims it provided the location, permits, and utilities needed. However, the rollout remains blocked over disagreement on who should manage appointment scheduling.
We have done everything within our reach: we’ve given permissions, identified the location, and ensured access to services. But paying for a venue or managing appointments doesn’t fall under municipal responsibility, it’s a National Police duty.

New Proposal Revives Old Site
Carlos Prieto, Spain’s Government Delegate in Catalonia, has suggested reopening the former Carrer Vallès location, provided necessary adaptations are made to meet National Police standards. The building is owned by the municipality, reigniting debate over funding and responsibility. Meanwhile, plans to integrate a documentation office into future court facilities adjacent to the Mossos d’Esquadra (regional police) headquarters remain undeveloped, with no construction timeline set. The project depends on action by the Generalitat.
Until a permanent or interim solution is implemented, Sant Cugat residents must continue travelling outside the city. For those needing urgent documentation, delays of more than two months are now standard. Citizens can check available appointments via the National Police electronic office portal. Local assistance and updates are also listed on the Ajuntament’s citizen services directory, where the National Police listing remains marked 'Temporarily Closed'.
