Clubs Honour Catalonia’s National Day
Barcelona’s major sports clubs joined public ceremonies on Friday to mark the Diada Nacional de Catalunya, with FC Barcelona and RCD Espanyol leading traditional floral offerings at the monument to Rafael Casanova. The annual tribute honours Casanova, a symbol of Catalan identity and resistance, and forms part of a broader series of civic events held across the city. According to Barcelona city council’s official programme, the floral offering at the monument to Rafael Casanova on Passeig de Lluís Companys took place on 11 September 2026, drawing delegations from across the city’s sporting institutions. FC Barcelona reaffirmed its participation through a social media post stating, "Bona Diada, culers! Visca el Barça i visca Catalunya!" The club’s official website also published a statement commemorating the day. RCD Espanyol echoed the sentiment with a public message reading, "Bona Diada, periques i pericos!" on X (formerly Twitter). Other clubs including UE Sant Andreu, CE Europa, and FC Martinenc also participated, either in person or through digital tributes. UE Sant Andreu attended a ceremony at the Capella dels Segadors in Plaça de les Dones Motor Ibèrica, as confirmed on the city council’s events calendar.

The Diada, observed annually on 11 September, commemorates the fall of Barcelona in 1714 during the War of the Spanish Succession. The Fossar de les Moreres, a memorial site to those who died defending the city, also hosted official acts, with the president of the Generalitat leading a floral tribute. The space remains a focal point for civic reflection and remembrance.
