Tarragona is celebrating the 90th birthday of acclaimed writer and piano teacher Olga Xirinacs today, 11 May 2026. Born on Rambla Nova in Tarragona in 1936, just before the Spanish Civil War, Xirinacs continues to reside in the city, though not in her original building.

A leading figure in Catalan literature, Xirinacs has explored nearly every literary genre and has received numerous awards recognising her excellence. To honour her milestone birthday, Tarragona City Council, the Institution of Catalan Letters, and the Department of Culture of the Generalitat are hosting a tribute this afternoon. The event, attended by Minister Sònia Hernández, will take place at Teatre Tarragona at 7pm.

A Life in Literature and Music

Olga Xirinacs has dedicated her life to both writing and music, maintaining her passion for playing the piano. Her extensive body of work spans various forms, earning her widespread critical acclaim and a collection of prestigious literary prizes throughout her career. She has often opened her home to the Diari de Tarragona to discuss literature, her connection to the city, and life experiences.

This celebration not only marks a personal milestone for Xirinacs but also highlights her enduring influence on Catalan culture. The event at Teatre Tarragona provides an opportunity for the community and literary figures to acknowledge her contributions.
