A man died after being struck by a regional train without passengers near Vila-seca station, Tarragona province, on Friday, 24 April. The incident occurred approximately 200 metres from the station as the train travelled towards Tarragona.
The train driver alerted superiors, and emergency services were called at 10.35pm. Mossos d'Esquadra patrols, supported by Vila-seca Local Police, attended the scene.
The train had departed from Reus and was heading to Tarragona to begin its operational service for Saturday. This is a routine procedure on Catalonia's railway network, where trains are repositioned at stations for their next day's service.
These manoeuvres, known as "material movement" in Renfe's terminology, typically happen late at night when rail traffic is lighter. During one such movement, a person crossed the tracks in an unauthorised area.
Police Investigate Death
Mossos d'Esquadra sources confirmed the death and stated that an investigation has begun to clarify the circumstances of the incident. The victim's identity is currently unknown, and it is unclear whether the incident was accidental or intentional.
Police authorised the reopening of the tracks minutes after midnight, allowing scheduled Saturday trains to operate normally.
