Tarragona City Council has declared two days of official mourning after the death of Pep Manresa, a 72-year-old councillor for Junts per Catalunya. The measure formally marks the loss of a municipal representative who had served on the council since the 2023 local elections.
Manresa died on Friday 31 July after spending a week in Hospital Joan XXIII, according to Diari de Tarragona. He had taken part remotely in the municipal plenary session on 21 July before being admitted to hospital the following day.
"We have lost a good friend, a good colleague and a person who loved Tarragona above all else," said Tarragona mayor Rubén Viñuales.
Manresa joined the council in 2023
Manresa, an estate-sector businessman, was third on the Junts per Catalunya list led by Jordi Sendra in the May 2023 municipal election. At the council's inaugural sitting on 17 June 2023, he was part of the age committee as the oldest of Tarragona's 27 councillors.
He was closely linked to the El Carme neighbourhood. On 18 July, the AV Verge del Carme neighbourhood association awarded him its Veí Fidel del barri recognition, represented at the event by Sendra.
Before returning to municipal politics, Manresa had been active in Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya and later backed the local Ara Tarragona platform.
