Amposta Town Hall has launched an augmented reality experience allowing visitors to see an estimated reconstruction of the town’s medieval castle and learn about the Hospitallers of the Order of Saint John. The €80,000 project also adds 90 interpretation panels across the municipality and a free mobile application in Catalan, Spanish, English and French.

Visitors can use the glasses free of charge at the current Amposta Tourist Office until the future Tourist Office opens in the Cases del Castell. The new facilities are being created in the restored castle houses.

“We do not have absolute knowledge of what the castle was like, but we have been able to reconstruct an approximation based on archaeological and historical evidence,” Mayor Adam Tomàs said.

The digital reconstruction is based on information from archaeological excavations and available historical documents. Tomàs said it includes an interpretative element to make the history of the monument easier to understand.

The new network of panels covers heritage, historical and natural sites throughout Amposta’s municipal area. Visitors can scan QR codes at public locations to open the free application and access expanded information.

  • The application includes three-dimensional reconstructions of 11 heritage sites that have disappeared or been altered.

Tourism councillor Inés Martí said the municipal platform will allow the content to be updated quickly and more interpretation points to be added. It will also collect usage data to help the council understand visitor habits and adapt Amposta’s tourism offer.

“We are starting with 90 panels, but the intention is to continue expanding them and add new points of interest,” Martí said.

According to Amposta Town Hall, the initiative forms part of the town’s Tourism Sustainability Plan, financed through Next Generation funds, which combines tourism modernisation with the recovery and public presentation of historical heritage.
