Historian Keynote and Flag Raising Set for 9 September
Igualada will hold the institutional act for the National Day of Catalonia on Wednesday 9 September 2026, beginning at 7pm with a lecture at the town hall’s session chamber. The event will feature historian, journalist, and writer Jaume Clotet Planas, who will deliver a talk titled 'The Country We Have: 12 September 1714'. Clotet, a graduate in Journalism from UAB and History from UB, won the 2024 Josep Pla Prize and the Nèstor Luján Historical Novel Award. Seating for the lecture is limited. At 8pm, the ceremony moves to the town hall square for the official reception of authorities and the raising of the Senyera, the Catalan flag. The Miquelets d’Igualada, a local historical reenactment group, will welcome dignitaries, and the Cor Exaudio choir will perform 'Els Segadors', the Catalan national anthem, before the flag is raised by Clotet. The evening concludes with a selection of traditional Catalan folk songs performed by Cor Exaudio, a 30-member women’s choir founded in Igualada in 1997 and currently led by Pablo Morales.
Extended Commemorations Include Sardana Dance and Cultural Awards
Beyond the 9 September institutional act, Igualada’s full Diada programme spans the month. On Saturday 12 September at 6.30pm, Plaça de Cal Font will host the Diada sardana dance, organised by the Agrupació Sardanista d’Igualada with municipal support and performed by Cobla Mediterrània. The celebrations close on Friday 18 September at 7.30pm at the Municipal Ateneu Theatre, with the Òmnium Cultural Anoia Cultural Commitment Awards. The free-entry event will honour actor Joan Valentí Cortès, known as 'Nan', the Calaf community centre (Casal de Calaf), and local resident Carla Junyent Cuatrecases with a special mention.
