Students at the Pere Vives i Vich Institute in Igualada, Central Catalonia, will attend five media literacy workshops on Tuesday, 3 May. These sessions, part of the EduMèdia programme, coincide with World Press Freedom Day and are aimed at 3rd-year ESO students.

The workshops will give students tools to interpret today's news environment, which often features false, manipulated, or out-of-context content. Participants will learn about how news is constructed, journalistic criteria, and information verification methods.

Joan Maria Morros, Dean of the College of Journalists of Catalonia, emphasised the importance of these initiatives. He stated, "Our commitment is to ensure that young people know how to understand, question, and verify the information they receive." Morros also highlighted the need to build resilience against misinformation and promote critical thinking.

Tackling Misinformation and AI

The workshops will also cover concepts such as 'infoxication' and the role of artificial intelligence in content generation. Students will discuss the importance of maintaining a balanced media diet.

The EduMèdia programme, launched in 2009 by the College of Journalists of Catalonia with support from the European Commission and the European Parliament Office in Barcelona, works to promote media education in schools. By hosting these workshops, the Pere Vives i Vich Institute joins efforts to encourage critical and well-informed citizens, which officials consider key to a free and diverse press.
