From CUP to Vox: A Political Shift
Isabel Gómez, who was the lead candidate for the anti-capitalist and pro-independence CUP in Terrassa during the 2007 municipal elections, has publicly aligned herself with Vox, the far-right Spanish nationalist party. Though she failed to win a council seat that year, Gómez is now seen supporting Alicia Tomás, Vox’s municipal spokesperson in Terrassa. Last Thursday, Gómez attended a press conference at Terrassa town hall alongside Tomás, where the latter denounced an alleged aggression by a family of Moroccan origin. Before speaking, Gómez presented Tomás with a bouquet of flowers, a gesture highlighted by anti-racism group Unitat Contra el Feixisme i el Racisme (UCFR) on social media.
Criticism Over Ideological Reversal
In 2007, Gómez advocated for immigrant voting rights and condemned racism, stating: "We want to be a welcoming, respectful city, and we will not tolerate fascist or racist behavior." At the time, she argued that denying non-EU residents the right to vote undermined democracy. This stands in stark contrast to her current associations. According to reports, Gómez has shared content on her private X account endorsing violent responses to Moroccan migrants in Ceuta and lamenting the absence of authoritarian control under Franco’s regime.

Vox Spokesperson Under Scrutiny
Alicia Tomás, whom Gómez supported with flowers, has been a polarising figure. In October 2024, the Public Prosecutor’s Office accepted a hate crime complaint against her for wearing a T-shirt bearing the slogan "More walls, fewer Moors" in Ca n'Anglada, a neighbourhood with a large immigrant population. The complaint was filed by the Observatori dels Drets Socials de Terrassa and law firm Espai Humana, who also reported the incident to local anti-racism services. Tomás later posted images of herself online wearing that shirt and another reading "Out with Islamism". Despite multiple complaints, Tomás responded publicly with mockery, tweeting: "Another complaint, you have to laugh.".
Earlier Controversy: Anti-Abortion Stance
Gómez first drew controversy in 2013 when she published a Facebook post identifying as left-wing while opposing abortion. She described the embryo as a "helpless life" and criticised progressive movements for abandoning principles like protecting the vulnerable. She insisted her views were secular and feminist, but the position placed her at odds with mainstream leftist and feminist circles. Though she said at the time that her stance did not represent the CUP, it marked an early divergence from the collective values of the anti-capitalist movement she once led locally.
