Jordi Sendra, Junts’ current spokesperson at Tarragona City Council, is the only candidate seeking to lead the party’s list in Tarragona’s 2027 municipal elections. His nomination must still be approved by Junts members in an online internal vote held from 10.00 on 28 July until 19.00 on 29 July.

For Tarragona residents, the result identifies the person likely to present Junts’ local programme at the next council election. The party’s rules require the vote to go ahead even when there is only one candidate, according to reporting by Europa Press.

Members must ratify the sole nomination

No other nomination was submitted during the process to choose Junts’ mayoral candidate, leaving Sendra without a rival in the primary process.

  • Candidate: Jordi Sendra, Junts spokesperson at Tarragona City Council.
  • Election: Tarragona’s 2027 municipal election.
  • Party vote: from 10.00 on 28 July to 19.00 on 29 July.
  • Voting method: an online consultation for Junts members, using the party’s internal system.

Lawyer Roger Baiges, who had previously indicated an intention to stand in a possible primary, ultimately did not enter the contest. Europa Press also reported that the party had considered Fede Arán, president of the Associació contra el Càncer and a former Convergència councillor, as a possible candidate, but this did not proceed.

Sendra sets out priorities for a possible campaign

In a letter seen by Europa Press, Sendra said he had decided to stand after speaking over several months with party members, residents, associations and other people involved in the city.

“Tarragona can be much more. And I believe it.”

Sendra said he wanted neighbourhoods not to be treated as peripheral to municipal politics. He also cited care for older people, opportunities for young people and the need to prevent residents having to leave Tarragona in order to live there.

Junts members will decide whether to ratify Sendra’s candidacy through the party’s internal online voting process between 28 and 29 July.
