Farmers in the Ebre Delta have begun flooding their rice fields, according to local irrigation communities. Water reserves and quality are considered optimal following a winter with good rainfall.

The irrigation communities for both the left and right banks of the Ebre River have started this annual process. The favourable water conditions are a positive sign for the upcoming rice growing season in the region.

However, the process has not been without its challenges. One farmer, Oriana, noted that despite the economic costs for the community, the flooding has caused delays. "Oriana made us lose time, which in the Delta is very limited, because when the water is released, the capacity to work is very restricted," the farmer told reporters. This highlights the precise timing required for agricultural operations in the area.

The Ebre Delta is a significant rice-producing region in Catalonia. The controlled flooding of fields is a traditional and necessary step to prepare the land for cultivation and to manage weeds.
