Matossers lead festive castellera display
The Plaça del Palau in Molins de Rei hosted a major castellera event on Sunday 20 September 2026 as part of the annual Festa Major de Sant Miquel. The local group Matossers were joined by Castellers d’Esparreguera, Castellers de Badalona, and Castellers del Poble-sec for a midday display that drew a packed crowd. Wearing their distinctive clay-brown, red, yellow, and blue shirts, the four colles, community-based human tower teams, attempted a series of castells built during recent weeks of rehearsal. The Matossers opened their performance with two pillars of four levels and attempted a 3 de 7 (a tower of seven levels with three people per level) which was loaded but collapsed during the unloading phase. Despite the early setback, the group achieved a solid performance, successfully completing a 5 de 6, a 4 de 6 amb agulla (with a central column), a pilar de 5, and finishing with a pilar de 4. The full achievement list marks a strong showing in front of a supportive audience.
Crowd turns out despite summer heat
Despite high midday temperatures, the Plaça del Palau remained full of residents and visitors eager not to miss the traditional event. Spectators followed each construction attempt closely, responding with sustained applause whenever a castell was successfully loaded and unloaded, particularly during the most tense moments. The castellera display is a central cultural highlight of the Festa Major, a week-long celebration honouring Sant Miquel. The event reflects the deep-rooted tradition of castells in Catalan towns and cities, where community, coordination, and courage are celebrated through human towers.
