Barcelona City Council has approved the incorporation of five new trees into its Catalogue of Trees of Local Interest, according to a decision made on 24 April. These specimens will now be part of a municipal register that identifies and protects the city's most singular trees.

The catalogue helps to highlight these "green neighbours" that are part of daily life in Barcelona. It includes trees, palm trees, and shrubs found on streets and in private gardens. Inclusion in the catalogue means these trees receive special care to ensure they continue to grow well, providing life, shade, and character to Barcelona's neighbourhoods.

New additions to the catalogue

The five new trees joining the catalogue are diverse in species and location. They include a Bunya pine (Araucaria bidwillii) in the Jardins de Can Borni, located in the Sant Genís dels Agudells neighbourhood of Horta-Guinardó. Another addition is a hackberry (Celtis australis) at Carrer de Piferrer, 92, in the Porta neighbourhood of Nou Barris.

An eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) in a house garden at Carrer de Labèrnia, 2, in the Can Baró neighbourhood of Horta-Guinardó, has also been added. Furthermore, a black poplar (Populus nigra) near the Can Llevallol fountain in Vallvidrera, Sarrià – Sant Gervasi, is now protected. Finally, a large-leaved lime (Tilia platyphyllos) at the entrance of the Can Masdéu farmhouse in the Canyelles neighbourhood of Nou Barris completes the list.

Protecting Barcelona's green heritage

This catalogue ensures the conservation and development conditions for these specimens. They are chosen for their rarity, species, age, size, historical value, or aesthetic morphological qualities. These trees form part of the everyday scenery of Barcelona's neighbourhoods. With these new additions, Barcelona now has a total of 213 catalogued trees, according to city officials.
