Reus to gain 129 new protected homes
The Territorial Urban Planning Commission of Camp de Tarragona has definitively approved a modification to Reus’s municipal planning, enabling the construction of 129 homes with official protection on two municipal plots. This change will increase the supply of public housing in the city and support urban regeneration, according to the Generalitat’s Department of Territory.
Locations confirmed in Mas Vilanova and Les Clarisses
The homes will be built on a plot at Carrer del Ball de Diables number 1 in the Mas Vilanova neighbourhood, south of the historic centre, and another at Carrer de Vilafortuny number 36 in Les Clarisses. These plots were offered to the Catalan government through the first call of the public land reserve for public housing, established under the Pla 50.000 initiative.
Old Urban Guard building to become community space
The planning update also reclassifies the site of the former Urban Guard building at number 67 Carrer del Roser, corner with Carrer Miramar. The existing building will be preserved and designated as part of the public community facilities network. Plans include converting the former garages into a covered, shaded public square and climate shelter. Additionally, the revised plan regulates residential use in ground-floor units of buildings, provided street-facing areas are used for complementary communal spaces.
This planning approval marks a key step forward in delivering affordable housing in Reus and regenerating key urban areas.
The move aligns with broader efforts by the Ajuntament and Generalitat to expand accessible housing, including recent calls for tenders on other developments such as the 132-home project in Mas Iglesias. Residents seeking protected housing must be registered in the Official Register of Applicants for Protected Housing (RSHPO) and meet income and residency criteria, as set out in related housing calls.
