Mossos Conduct Major Traffic Check in Camp de Tarragona

171 Fines Issued in Morning-Long Operation

The Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police, issued 171 traffic fines and six transport-related penalties during a high-visibility enforcement operation conducted on Thursday morning across the Camp de Tarragona road network. Patrols were deployed at multiple locations along the AP-7, T-11, and C-14 roads by officers from both the Camp de Tarragona and Metropolitan South units. The operation focused on detecting distracted driving, particularly mobile phone use, and alcohol or drug impairment among drivers.

Focus on Mobile Distraction and Speeding

Of the 171 traffic fines, 59 were for speeding and 40 for distractions at the wheel, including handling a mobile phone while driving. Other violations included 11 for not using safety restraints, 10 for circulation offences, 14 for documentation irregularities, and 32 administrative infractions. Four drivers were found to be operating vehicles without a valid licence. Officers conducted 213 breathalyser tests and one drug test, all returning negative results.

Sergeant Ramon Aldomar of the Traffic Division explained that concentrating enforcement efforts increases deterrence and helps "prevent accidents." He highlighted that mobile phone distractions, especially when sending messages, reduce reaction time and attention, significantly raising crash risk. Using a handheld mobile phone while driving carries a fine of €200 and the loss of six points on a driver’s licence.

Part of Six-Week Regional Campaign

This operation marks the first of six planned macrocontrols across Catalonia over the coming weeks. The initiative responds to rising concerns about distraction-related incidents and impaired driving as leading causes of road accidents.
