Vox's municipal group in Sant Cugat del Vallès said on Tuesday that parties represented on the Ajuntament, the town council, other than the Partido Popular (PP), had declined to join its proposed institutional condemnation of an alleged assault on its councillor Jordi Guirado.
The dispute concerns whether the council should make a formal statement about the alleged attack on an elected representative. Vox said the lack of agreement meant its proposed declaration would not be issued, despite its call for Sant Cugat to reaffirm political pluralism, safety and freedom of expression.
According to Vox, Guirado was verbally and physically attacked on 10 September while the party was running a street information stand in the town. The party said he was taken to Hospital General de Catalunya for medical treatment.
“We will not take a single step back in defending our ideas. We will continue to be present on the streets, facing up to the public and representing thousands of people in Sant Cugat,” Vox spokesperson Marcos Rodríguez said.
Groups named by Vox
Vox said it submitted a proposed declaration asking the council to condemn the alleged attack unequivocally and to uphold the physical safety of residents and their right to gather and express political views.
The party said the following groups did not join the initiative:
- Junts per Catalunya
- Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC)
- Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya (PSC)
- Candidatura d'Unitat Popular (CUP)
- En Comú Podem
Vox said the PP was the only other group to support its proposal. Rodríguez accused the other parties of applying different standards according to a victim's political affiliation.
Vox said it would continue holding street information events in Sant Cugat.
