Diada demonstration draws crowds in Barcelona
Thousands of people gathered in central Barcelona on Friday 11 September 2026 for the annual Diada demonstration, organised under the slogan "Hi soc. Hi som. Independència" (I am here. We are here. Independence). The event, coordinated by pro-independence groups including the Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC), Òmnium Cultural, and the Consell de la República, featured two separate columns converging on Plaça Catalunya. The first column, symbolising the "present", began at 5:14pm from Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes and Carrer Casanova, proceeding via Plaça de la Universitat and Ronda de la Universitat. The second, representing the "future", started at the same time from Via Laietana and Plaça de la Catedral, moving through Ronda de Sant Pere. Both columns reached Plaça Catalunya around 6:15pm, where political speeches were scheduled to follow.
Transport and access guidance
Attendees were advised to use public transport due to expected traffic disruptions. The L1 metro line to Urgell station was recommended for access to the "present" column, while the L4 line to Jaume I station served the "future" route start. Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya reinforced train services across the Rodalies network to accommodate increased passenger numbers during the day, according to a government announcement. Demonstrations also took place in Girona and Amposta, continuing a decentralised format used in previous years. In Girona, a single column departed from Plaça de Catalunya at 5:14pm, while Amposta hosted two staggered columns converging at the town’s hanging bridge.
Participants express resolve despite challenges
Despite organisers acknowledging that mobilisation has become increasingly difficult, participants expressed firm commitment to the cause. Residents from across Catalonia, including Sant Sadurní d'Anoia and Sallent, attended the march. Young attendees from Barcelona’s Sant Andreu district stressed their determination, saying they fight for a dignified future amid rising concerns over social and economic conditions. Farmers from Mataró, Argentona, and Vilassar de Mar joined the demonstration with tractors, underscoring rural involvement. One participant, Dídac, said independence remains a vital tool and called for political leadership capable of serving Catalan society. Others voiced frustration with political leadership but insisted that ongoing participation reflects clear conviction.
"We come every year because we have our ideas very clear," said Montse, a participant from Sant Sadurní, echoing the day’s prevailing sentiment.
