Three-city mobilisation marks 11-S
On Thursday 11 September 2026, pro-independence groups will hold decentralised rallies in Barcelona, Girona and Amposta under the slogan "Hi soc. Hi som. Independència" (I am here. We are here. Independence). The events are jointly organised by Òmnium Cultural, the Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC), the Consell de la República, AMI, Intersindical and CIEMEN. The move continues a shift from single-city demonstrations, with Amposta hosting its first national Diada rally. Organisers say the southern Tarragona town symbolises a renewed push for independence in areas beyond Catalonia’s major urban centres.

In Barcelona, two columns will march separately before converging at Plaça Catalunya. The 'Present' column starts at 17:14 on Gran Via at Carrer de Casanova, passing Plaça de la Universitat. The 'Future' column begins at the same time on Via Laietana near Plaça de la Catedral, moving via Ronda de Sant Pere. Metro lines L1 (Urgell stop) and L4 (Jaume I stop) serve the starting points. In Girona, a single demonstration starts at 17:14 from Plaça de Catalunya, proceeding along Gran Via de Jaume I, Avinguda de Ramon Folc and past the Rellotge roundabout, ending at La Copa. In Amposta, two columns will form at 16:30 and 16:50 on Carrer Sebastià Juan Arbó and Avinguda Santa Bàrbara respectively, meeting at the town’s hanging bridge (Pont Penjant). At 19:00, the day closes with a concert and sardana dancing by Cobla Ciutat d’Amposta at Plaça Ramon Berenguer IV.
Political and cultural focus
Zacarías Henar, president of Òmnium Cultural del Tarragonès, said the 2026 Diada carries renewed urgency amid the rise of far-right politics across Europe. He invoked the emotional legacy of 1976, the first year of public demonstrations after Spain’s dictatorship ended. The ANC’s national president, Josep Vila, linked the mobilisation to broader social grievances, citing disrupted Rodalies commuter rail services, housing access difficulties and weakening public services. He stressed that only independence could resolve these issues. Both Òmnium and ANC representatives highlighted the defence of the Catalan language as a central demand, expressing concern over its declining social use but also hope for revitalisation.

In Barcelona, the day concludes with the annual 'Festa per la Llibertat' at Passeig Lluís Companys from 19:00, featuring performances by DJ Trapella, La Gossa Sorda and DJ K-ZU. Òmnium will hold a brief political act during the event aimed at young people. Organisers confirm the rally is open to all, including Aliança Catalana, though they reaffirm an absolute commitment to human rights and rejection of hate speech.
