Heckling during floral tribute
Critics shouted "fascists out of our neighbourhoods" at Catalan Alliance members during a floral tribute to Rafael Casanova in Sant Cugat on Friday morning. The event marked Catalonia's National Day, held annually on 11 September. This was the first time Catalan Alliance had taken part in the ceremony, despite not holding any seats on the Sant Cugat city council. The tribute was led by party figure Ernest Weronski i Falcó, accompanied by several members. No speech was delivered.
Broader commemorations continue
The floral tribute, held at the monument in Plaça Rafael Casanova, began at 9:00 and concluded with the institutional offering at 11:00. Around two dozen civic, sports, and independence groups laid wreaths throughout the morning. The event continued with the singing of the Catalan national anthem, Els Segadors, at 11:15, followed by a choral performance and the mayor's official address at 12:30 in Plaça de la Vila. The 2026 commemoration in Sant Cugat carried the theme "Rebuilding the Country from 1714", inviting residents to reflect on Catalonia's history. Events began earlier in the week, including a lecture by journalist Víctor Alexandre on 8 September at the town hall’s Àgora space.
The presence of Catalan Alliance, a party with no elected representation in the municipality, sparked visible dissent from republican youth groups.
Later in the day, a sardana performance by Cobla Ciutat de Terrassa is scheduled for 20:00 in Plaça d’Octavià. Residents can view the full programme of events on the Visit Sant Cugat website.
