Vinebre, in Catalonia's Ribera d'Ebre, recorded 39.5C, the highest temperature ever measured in the region during May, according to Meteocat. The reading broke the previous day's high of 38.5C at the same weather station as a heatwave peaked across the area.

Other places in Catalonia also saw very high temperatures. Ascó reached 37.7C, Seròs in Segrià hit 37.5C, Torroja del Priorat recorded 37.3C, and Benissanet and the Riba-roja reservoir, both in Ribera d'Ebre, reached 37.1C.

The heatwave also affected neighbouring areas. In the Valencian Country, Sumacàrcer in Ribera Alta reached 38.2C and Gavarda hit 38C, according to AVAMET data. Other high readings included 37.8C in Càrcer, 37.5C in Pobla Llarga, 37.4C in Cotes, 37.3C in Alzira, and 37.2C in Vilamarxant and Aldaia.

Valencia city went above 30C for the first time this year, reaching 34.6C. AEMET said this was the ninth time since 1920 that temperatures have exceeded 30C between January and May. Further west, in the Franja de Ponent, Mequinensa in Baix Cinca also went above 38C, while Fraga and Maella in Matarranya passed 37C, according to AEMET data.

The Balearic Islands also saw intense heat, with Mallorca the most affected island. Port de Pollença recorded 35.6C, Manacor 35C, Binissalem 34.5C and Pobla 34.1C. Andorra had several readings above 30C, led by Roc de Sant Pere at 32.3C, while Perpinyà in Northern Catalonia reached 32C, more than five degrees below the previous day.

Heat alerts remained in place in parts of Northern Catalonia as meteorological services continued to monitor the wider spell of hot weather across the region.
