Subtitled and Signed Events for Inclusive Access
The 2026 Festa Major in Vilafranca del Penedès will offer live subtitles and Catalan Sign Language (LSC) interpretation across key events to improve access for people with hearing impairments. On 28 August, the main 'pregó' opening ceremony will feature real-time subtitles displayed on the square’s screen and streamed via Penedès Televisió’s YouTube channel. This follows advocacy by the Associació Catalana per a la Promoció de les Persones Sordes (ACAPPS), which highlighted the need to support oralist deaf individuals who rely on lip reading or implants. The pregonet youth address will provide printed scripts due to technical limitations in live subtitling. LSC interpreters will be present at the pregó, pregonet and spoken ball performances, with both sign language and subtitles shown simultaneously on the main screen.
Quiet Zones for Sensory Needs
To support neurodivergent attendees and those with autism spectrum disorder (TEA) or sound sensitivity, quiet zones will be established during the 29 August cercavila parade and the 31 August procession. These areas will reduce music volume and eliminate thunder-based pyrotechnics from fire troupes. During the 29 August parade, the quiet space will be located at Plaça del Vall del Castell, equipped with sun shelters, signage and staff from Vilafranca’s Culture Service. For the 31 August procession heading to administrator Roger Santacana’s residence, the low-stimulation zone will be at the corner of Carrer de Sant Julià and Carrer d’Oriol.
Calm Hours at Fairground Rides
In coordination with fair operators, the Zona Esportiva attractions will operate without music daily between 17:30 and 19:00. This adaptation allows children with TEA and acoustic sensitivities to enjoy the rides in a safer, quieter environment. The measure builds on successful trials in previous years and is supported by the local Autism amb futur association and the Festivity Council.
