City Asks for Expanded Primary Care Services
The Ajuntament de Vic has unanimously approved a motion calling on the Generalitat to create a third Àrea Bàsica de Salut (ABS) and build a third Centre d’Atenció Primària (CAP) in response to the city’s growing population. The motion was jointly proposed by Junts, Ara Vic, and the PSC during Monday’s plenary session and received support from all political groups except the CUP, which abstained. The request comes as current healthcare infrastructure faces mounting pressure. The council also urged the regional government to clarify timelines for planned works, including expansions and upgrades to existing primary care facilities.
New CAP Project Moving Forward
Local officials confirmed that plans for the new CAP Vic Nord, to be built on the site of the former municipal market, are progressing. A design ideas competition is currently open and will close on 26 October 2026 [S1]. The land transfer for this project was previously approved behind closed doors, sparking protests from citizens concerned about the closure of the Capuchins CAP [S2]. Anna Alemany, spokesperson for Junts, emphasized the need to ensure the current CAP Vic Nord building remains in social or healthcare use after services relocate. The property is state-owned, but negotiations are underway to transfer it either to the Generalitat or, if necessary, to the Vic City Council [S1].
Council Pushes for Medical Clinic Reopening
The motion adopted by the council includes an amendment from SOMI calling for the reopening of the Sentfores–la Guixa medical clinic, which closed during the pandemic and has not resumed operations. This follows earlier approval of a similar motion at the December 2 plenary session [S3]. Separately, the CUP has taken the issue to the Catalan Parliament, filing a resolution to defend the creation of a third CAP after the regional health minister confirmed plans to close the current CAP Vic Nord [S3]. The parliamentary proposal also demands the restoration of medical services in la Guixa with staffing appropriate to local demand.
We must prioritise accessible, local healthcare and avoid centralisation that harms residents’ daily lives.
During Monday’s debate, ERC, En Comú Podem, and the CUP called on Mayor Oriol López to withdraw a legal challenge blocking a citizen-led consultation on the Capuchins CAP. The mayor did not respond to the request.
Residents and stakeholders can follow updates on the CAP Vic Nord project through the Ajuntament de Vic's official website and monitor health planning developments via the Institut Català de la Salut portal.
