Netflix's popular thriller series, 'The Night Agent', is currently filming its fourth and final season in Los Angeles, United States. Production started this Tuesday, with the series securing California's film tax incentives, according to Netflix and Sony Pictures Television.
The decision to end the show comes after a notable decline in viewership following its highly successful debut. Shawn Ryan, the series creator, confirmed that this fourth season will provide a conclusive ending for the story.
Viewership Declines After Strong Start
'The Night Agent' premiered in March 2023, becoming an unexpected hit for Netflix. It garnered 20.4 million views in its opening weekend, earning a spot on the platform's list of most-watched series ever. However, when the third season launched in January 2025, viewership dropped significantly to 13.9 million.
This downward trend continued into February, with the series attracting only 8.4 million views in its first week. This represented a 59% decrease in audience between the first and third seasons, highlighting a shift in subscriber interest, particularly concerning the character of agent Peter Sutherland, played by Gabriel Basso.
Creator Promises Satisfying Conclusion
Given these figures, Shawn Ryan developed a fourth season that could either continue the story or serve as a finale. With the decision now made, Ryan can ensure a satisfactory conclusion for fans. "Since 'The Night Agent' had its initial success, I have been obsessed with delivering at some point a proper and exciting conclusion to the series and Peter Sutherland's journey," Ryan told Deadline.
The production team is now "working hard to complete" the story, aiming to make the final season memorable for fans. To achieve this, 'The Night Agent' has added several new cast members. These include Titus Welliver from 'Bosch' as the new Department of Justice prosecutor, Trevante Rhodes from 'Moonlight' as Peter's new partner, Li Jun Li from 'The Sinners' as his partner's wife, and Elizabeth Lail from 'You' as Zoe, Peter's ex-fiancée.
