Mediation efforts between the management of Girona+Neta, the city's waste collection concessionaire, and employee representatives concluded without an agreement on Monday afternoon, 4 May. Unions are maintaining the indefinite strike as they push for better working conditions.
According to a statement from the strike committee, workers submitted a proposal on Sunday night which the company rejected on Monday without offering a counter-proposal. The committee noted that the parties "did not even share the same negotiation space" during Monday's meeting, which it said "shows the absence of a real willingness to dialogue from the company".
Workers' representatives also confirmed they have been called to a strike monitoring meeting by Girona city council on Tuesday at 2.30pm. The committee is demanding real and effective negotiation. It opposes the company's suggestion that private company wage increases should be funded by public money from citizen taxes.
Earlier on Monday, the city council deemed the minimum services decreed by the Generalitat insufficient. Sergi Cot, the Councillor for Climate Action in the Ecological Transition Area, expressed concern about the accumulation of organic waste in the streets. He did not rule out requesting a public health emergency, which would allow the council to contract additional services to remove rubbish.
